Vision is the most valuable asset of our life. Due to several reasons like fast and unhealthy lifestyle, pollutions, etc our vision is getting affected every day. We have to protect it before it becomes too late.

Digital stress on the eyes has been the villain of our vision nowadays. Today I’ll discuss 20-20-20 rules for eye health. This helps to keep our eyes healthy.

What is 20-20-20 rule?

In the simplest word, it is the mandatory 20 seconds rest that we have to take in every 20 minutes while working on a digital device for a long period. You have to divert your vision from a digital device to 20 feet away. The great Californian optimist, Jeffrey Anshel designed this remarkable and easy rule.

When to use?

This rule is specially designed for reducing eye strain. But it is always a good practice to apply this rule, even if you are not feeling any strain on your eyes.

What are the symptoms of eye strain?

While working for a long time on a laptop, we feel redness, soaring, and burning of eyes. This is the most common indication of eye strain. Other indications include blurred or double vision, watery eyes, itching, or dryness of eyes, and even headache.

How to use the 20-20-20 rule?

You might be thinking how would be it possible to take timely 20 seconds to break while working very cautiously. Here I must suggest to you a few steps and approaches.

  • The best is to set a repeating alarm on your Smartphone at an interval of every 20 minutes.
  • Keep a target 20 feet away from where you are sitting.
  • Other than setting a target you can also look outside the window for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
  • You can also close your eyes and relax for 20 to 30 seconds every 20 minutes. This also works.
  • If possible, get up from your seat every 20 minutes and look around the room other than that any digital device screen.
  • However, excessive stress on your eye will take time to make the 20-20-20 rule effective. So to foster the result, I’ll suggest doing a few things besides.
  • Go for a regular eye checkup, at least twice a year.
  • Doctors now prescribe a few regular drops that lower the stress on the eyes and conserve the eye’s health. This also helps in preventing dryness. But always check, if the prescribes one is preservative-free or not. I don’t suggest drops with preservatives.
  • Make some changes to your digital device setting. Using larger text soothes our eyes. Make the text twice as usual.
  • Avoid using a deep colored background. Black text in white background is always the best option.
  • Wear anti-glare eyeglasses, a screen protector while working. The curved screen is a trend now but that hurts our eyes, the flat screen is the best option in this regard.
  • Use an adequate level of screen brightness while reading the text.

If you find anything unusual to your vision even after following these measures along with 20-20-20 rules, immediately consult a doctor. Don’t wait for long for natural recovery. Because, in the case of most eye diseases, the symptoms are showed up only at the advanced stage. So, a further delay might steal your vision.
