What is Glaucoma?
Eye is a very sensitive organ of the human body that over a period of time develops various complications. One such condition is known as Glaucoma. It arises due to the damage of the optic nerve – the nerve that sends visual signals to the brain from the retina.
Although the exact reason for glaucoma is unknown, it is believed that the deterioration of optic nerve leads to blind spots in the visual area of the eye eventually leading to glaucoma and further to vision loss. The deterioration in the optic nerve may be a result of the elevated pressure in the eyes.
Glaucoma although observed in people aged above 60, it is genetically transferred and hence, with age and history, risk associated with this condition increases.

Causes of Glaucoma:
Doctors analyze the problem related with glaucoma as, a result of high eye pressure. The eye pressure might be due to the accumulation of excess fluid (aqueous humor) that hasn’t found its way to drain out.
The aqueous humor is an internal fluid that flows throughout the eye and generally takes an exit through a tissue called the “trabecular meshwork”. At a stage where this fluid excessively builds up or the drainage isn’t able to put it out at the normal rate, the pressure on the eye increases.
In some cases, the optic nerves are very sensitive to hold the normal eye pressure.
Risk of glaucoma increases in such people and only a regular eye check up can help identify the signs of damage to the optic nerve.
Glaucoma types and symptoms:
Glaucoma is classified into two groups depending on its stage, symptoms:
1. Primary Open-angle glaucoma:
This is the most common type of glaucoma seen, where there is no pain or vision changes initially. It occurs when there is an uprise in the eye pressure due to the excess fluid, which is not drained out of the eyes as happens in normal cases.
Primary open-angle glaucoma doesn’t show any symptoms initially. As the disease advances, following symptoms might be observed –
- Gradual loss of peripheral vision, usually in both eyes
- Tunnel vision in the advanced stages – loss in the edges of the vision / narrow vision.
2. Angle-closure glaucoma –
Angle-closure glaucoma, also called the – narrow-angle glaucoma / closed-angle glaucoma is an advanced stage which happens when the iris of the eye is very close to the drainage angle in the eye, thus blocking the drainage. This leads to increased eye pressure resulting in an “acute attack“, an emergency situation that needs immediate medical assistance.
Farsightedness and cataracts may also lead to increased eye pressure and hence cause blockage.
This type of glaucoma shows up the following symptoms –
- Eye redness
- Eye pain
- Severe headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Acute angle-closure glaucoma
- Loss of peripheral vision / central vision, blind spots on the sides, frequently in both eyes.
- Halos around lights
3. Normal-tension glaucoma:
In this case, the eye pressure remains normal but the optic nerve is damaged for reasons unknown. It may be due to lack of blood flow or some other reason.
4. Congenital Glaucoma
This is a rare condition usually seen in babies and may be inherited. When there is incorrect or incomplete development of the eye’s drainage canals during the prenatal period, this condition is observed.
Secondary glaucoma, Pigmentary glaucoma, Neovascular glaucoma, traumatic glaucoma and etc are other glaucoma variations.
Risk factors of Glaucoma:
Following are the risk factors of glaucoma and such conditions are at higher risk of developing glaucoma –
- Aged above 40
- Have a family history of glaucoma
- Have vision problems
- Have diabetes / high blood pressure
- Consumption of steroid medications for a long time
- Previous injury to eyes
- Have congenital issues like thin cornea or damaged optic nerve
- Have heart disease, diabetes, or sickle cell anemia
- Have high eye pressure
- Short sighted or long sighted problems
Best Glaucoma Treatment in Gulbarga for glaucoma involves the application of eye drops, anti-glaucoma medications, and surgery.
The awareness of glaucoma amongst people becomes essential at this point of time owing to the irreversible effects it has on our eyes. Regular dilated eye check-ups are an uncompromised promise one must make to self when the above said risk factors are associated.
Glaucoma affects the peripheral or the central vision system. If left untreated, this may lead to significant vision loss in both eyes and eventually to blindness. Hence glaucoma is termed as the silent vision killer!
